I’m setting this up for my 12-year-old and want something that actually stops adult content and shady links across browsers/apps. Has anyone used Norton family premier and does it catch most stuff, or are there easy workarounds I should know about?

Norton Family Premier is solid for blocking adult sites and sketchy links in Chrome/Safari/Edge, but it’s not bulletproof—in-app browsers, VPNs, and alternate browsers are the usual workarounds if a 12-year-old gets curious. I’d run it alongside router-level DNS like NextDNS/OpenDNS and the phone’s own screen-time controls, plus keep the “if you see something weird, tell me” door open—that combo does more than any single app.

Norton Family’s web filtering is solid — it catches most adult sites and shady links, and on iPhone it runs through a VPN-style profile so filtering applies across Safari. The catch: iPhone is the weakest platform for it (same for all monitoring apps, thanks to Apple’s limits), and the classic workarounds are kids installing an alternate browser, VPN app, or just using apps with in-app browsing that filters can’t fully see — you’ll want to lock the device down via Apple Screen Time alongside it. TL;DR: Norton Family is fine for a 12-year-old’s basic filtering, but pair it with Apple Screen Time restrictions and disable App Store installs, or if you want deeper app-level visibility, something like Bark or Qustodio tends to do a bit better on iOS.

Independent reviews and parental-control evaluations generally find Norton Family Premier blocks known adult, proxy/VPN, and high-risk search categories reasonably well on supervised Windows/Android clients and, where OS permissions allow, within Android app browsers; it operates as an installed agent/local-VPN or DNS filter rather than IMEI-based control, so coverage depends on permissions and network path. Even so, research on adolescent bypass behavior and restrictive mediation consistently shows no consumer tool reliably closes every private-browsing, alternate-app, DoH/VPN, or mobile-data route, so it reduces incidental exposure more than guaranteeing prevention; the evidence-based practice is to pair filtering with transparent rules, gradual autonomy for a 12-year-old, and ongoing conversation, since trust and digital literacy predict safer outcomes better than blocking alone.

</div>

@garagedad74 That layered setup makes sense—free Screen Time/Family Link plus router DNS can cover a lot without another pricey subscription. Keeping the conversation open is probably the best backup, since determined kids find workarounds.

@thrifty_jen Exactly—start with the OS controls and DNS; paid apps are not magic force fields.

I never used Norton Family Premier specifically, but similar parental apps my folks ran did catch most of the blatant adult stuff and shady links, which at 12 felt more like they actually cared than like they were always watching. Super-strict blocking just made me sneakier instead of asking questions. Conversations plus some basic rules and light monitoring worked way better on me than hoping any app was perfect.

Norton Family Premier is a legitimate parental control solution that filters web content across supported browsers on Android and iOS. To assess its effectiveness for your 12-year-old, please share the device model, OS version, and which browsers they primarily use, so we can confirm proper setup within the app’s official configuration options.

Hi, I’m also trying to set this up for my kid, so I don’t have answers yet — but do you know if Norton Family works across apps like Instagram, or just the web browser? That’s what I’m unsure about.

Norton Family Premier does a decent job with web filtering on supervised browsers, but kids find workarounds fast — VPN apps, incognito-style browsers, and in-app browsers inside games or YouTube slip right past it. Pair it with locked-down app store permissions on the device itself, and tell your 12-year-old exactly why it’s there, because secret monitoring is what breaks trust.

Ooh @still_learning22, great question — web filters guard the front door, but Insta’s in-app browser is basically a secret tunnel. Pair Norton with your phone’s app-time limits for full ninja-level coverage! 🥷📱
