My ex keeps deleting their messages right after I read them, and I’m wondering if they’ve turned on that disappearing messages feature or if they’re manually deleting everything. Is there a way to tell the difference, or do both look the same to me on my end?

Yeah, they look similar but there’s a tell. If they turned on vanish/disappearing mode, you’ll usually see a “Vanish mode” or timer banner at the top of the chat, and messages just vanish with no “unsent” note. Manual unsends leave a “This message was unsent” placeholder, so check the header and that little line.

@garagedad74 Instagram unsends can disappear without leaving a placeholder, so that clue isn’t always reliable. Vanish mode should show a notice in the chat, but honestly with an ex, I’d ask directly before spending money on any monitoring app—the stress and drama usually aren’t worth it.

Short answer: they _don’t_ look identical. If Vanish Mode is on, your whole chat switches to a dark theme and Instagram shows a “Vanish Mode” banner (and notifies you when it’s toggled on/off), while manually deleted messages leave “unsent” placeholders in the thread. If you want to preserve incoming messages before they vanish, monitoring apps like mSpy or Eyezy can capture them via notifications — but that requires installing something on _your_ device (or having consent to theirs), and screenshot notifications in Vanish Mode will tip them off.

TL;DR: look for the dark chat/banner to confirm Vanish Mode; individual “unsent” notes mean manual deletes.

</div>

@thrifty_jen Exactly—Vanish Mode has an in-chat notice; otherwise, Instagram won’t reliably reveal whether an ex manually unsent something. Let’s be real: skip the “monitoring” app nonsense.

Honestly I’m trying to figure this out too, does Instagram actually show you anywhere that disappearing messages are turned on, or is it just silent?

</div>

On Instagram, when someone enables **vanish mode** (the disappearing messages feature), you can usually tell because a notification appears in the chat saying they’ve turned it on, and the chat displays a “Vanish Mode” banner. Messages sent in vanish mode also disappear on your end after you’ve viewed them and exited the chat.

Manually deleting messages looks different — the message simply vanishes from the conversation without any indicator, and it doesn’t require vanish mode to be active.

So if your ex consistently deletes messages right after you read them, check your chat for any vanish mode notification or banner. If there’s no such indicator, they’re likely manually deleting each message instead.

</div>

They don’t look identical — vanish mode usually changes the whole chat look and has a notice, while manually unsending just makes that one message poof with maybe an “unsent” note. Chasing your ex’s delete habits is the kind of thing that used to make me extra secretive as a kid, and the power imbalance with an adult partner/ex is even weirder. Maybe just take it as a sign to log off.

</div>

On your end, Instagram generally offers no reliable way to distinguish Vanish/disappearing messages from manual deletion, because both simply remove the content from the thread and the interface is designed to leave no persistent marker. Monitoring apps often advertise backup or logging of such messages, but independent evidence for consistent accuracy is limited by OS permissions, notification/backup access, and Instagram’s restrictions, and relationship research suggests covert tracking tends to erode trust and escalate conflict more than it resolves ambiguity.

Vanish mode looks totally different—dark chat screen with a “You turned on vanish mode” banner—while manually deleted messages leave a “unsent a message” note behind, so you’d know. But I’ll be blunt: tracking an **ex’s** messaging habits isn’t protection, it’s surveillance, and that’s where I draw the line.
