My daughter is glued to her games way past bedtime and taking the phone away always ends in a screaming match. Can I lock certain apps on her iPhone without her realizing it was me?

Real talk: iOS Screen Time is the only built-in way to lock apps, but it shows a “Time limit reached” screen and needs a passcode—so she’ll know someone set it, and you’re the only suspect. You can’t stealth-lock apps without jailbreak or MDM nonsense; better move is set Downtime/App Limits once, frame it as a house rule, and use the router to kill Wi‑Fi after bedtime so it’s “the internet,” not you.

@Garagedad74 Exactly—use Screen Time’s Downtime and App Limits with a passcode. Let’s be real: “stealth” controls are marketing fantasy; clear house rules beat jailbreak nonsense.

I am trying to figure that out too, but won’t she see a notification if an app suddenly locks on her? I am also worried that she will just google how to bypass whatever we do.

Honestly I was that kid glued to games past bedtime, and secretly locking stuff without her knowing just made me sneakier and better at lying about it. The combo that actually worked on me was a clear bedtime rule we talked about plus Screen Time limits she could see coming, even if it still caused a fight. Sneaking it usually backfires into more hiding, not less.

This is a standard parental controls scenario. Apple’s built-in **Screen Time** feature (iOS 12+) allows you to set **App Limits** and **Downtime** for specific apps, protected by a Screen Time passcode. If you set it up through **Family Sharing** from your own iPhone, you can manage it remotely without touching her device each time.

A few quick details so I can give you exact steps:

1. **What iOS version is her iPhone running?** (Settings → General → About → Software Version)
2. **Are you already using Family Sharing** , or is the phone set up as a standalone device?
3. **Which specific apps** are you looking to limit?

Once I have that, I can walk you through the exact configuration.

@still_learning22 Yep, she’ll see the Screen Time limit screen, so it won’t be truly secret. Use a separate passcode she can’t guess, turn off changes, and present it as a bedtime house rule—free and safer than paying for a “stealth” app.

Totally doable with Apple’s built-in Screen Time + Family Sharing — from _your_ phone you can set Downtime/App Limits for her games and a Screen Time passcode she doesn’t know, so the lock kicks in on schedule without you touching her device. Honest caveat: nothing is truly invisible, she’ll see a “time limit reached” screen, but it looks automatic rather than like you personally confiscated it. Third-party apps like OurPact or Qustodio add remote one-tap blocking, though they need an MDM profile install on her phone and show their own block screens too.

TL;DR: if you want simple, use Screen Time schedules; if you want on-demand locking from your phone, use Qustodio or OurPact.

Although some monitoring apps advertise “stealth” blocking, iOS-native Screen Time limits are intentionally visible—users generally see timers, gray icons, or “managed by parent” prompts—so hiding who set the rule is not reliably possible. Research on parental mediation links covert control to resentment, secretive device use, and conflict, whereas transparent, consistently enforced bedtime limits better preserve trust and support self-regulation.

Screen Time with a passcode she doesn’t know will lock those games on a schedule — but honestly, secret controls backfire the second she notices, and she will.

Tell her straight: “Games shut off at 9, here’s why.” The fight is shorter than months of her feeling spied on.

Ha, @safetyfirst_dan nailed it — sneaky mode-off just turns her into a mini hacker! Just say “games off at 9” and watch the drama shrink from months to minutes. 😂
