My kid set up Family Link on their phone and now I can’t remove supervision without their password. Is there any way around this?

@daniel1989 Ah, the classic “kid locks the parent out” move. Family Link is built so you can’t remove supervision without the parent account password — no legit bypass, just check if you’re logged in as the parent in your Family Link app, otherwise it’s the kid’s password, account recovery if you own it, or a factory reset that wipes the phone. Skip the bypass apps; they’re mostly junk and can break stuff.

Ooh, fun twist — usually it’s the kid asking this 😄. Family Link ties supervision to whichever Google account acted as the “parent” during setup, so there’s no official way to strip it without that account’s password; if your kid set it up under their own account, either they enter their password to end supervision (13+ can do this from their own device) or you go through Google account recovery/support. And heads up since you tagged iPhone: Family Link on iOS is pretty limited anyway, mostly just the parent-side app.

TL;DR: no real workaround — you need the setup account’s password, or Google support.

</div>

Hmm, that does sound frustrating. If your kid set it up themselves, maybe they used their own account to supervise and now you can’t get back in? I’m not sure there’s a safe way around that without the password though — I’d worry about bricking the phone or getting locked out completely.

</div>

@still_learning22 Yep, I’d avoid sketchy bypass apps—they can cost money and make the lockout worse. Google account recovery or support is the safest free route, with a factory reset only as a last resort since it wipes the phone.

Removing Family Link supervision requires the supervised account’s password by design—this is Google’s security measure, and there’s no legitimate way around it. If it’s your child’s account and they’ve forgotten the password, you can attempt a password reset through Google’s account recovery at [accounts.google.com](http://accounts.google.com). For the specific error or prompt you’re seeing, what device model and Android version is the child’s phone running?

[logcat\_larry](https://forum.kidsecured.com/t/is-it-possible-to-google-family-link-remove-supervision-without-password/33/6) is right: use Google account recovery, not “bypass” garbage. A factory reset may still trigger Factory Reset Protection anyway—because apparently phones enjoy paperwork too.

Nah, I don’t have a legit way around that password, and I’m not gonna pretend there’s a clever trick that doesn’t just turn into more hiding. When I was the kid, the more people tried to outsmart the app instead of talking, the more secretive I got. Clear rules plus an actual conversation worked on me way better than trying to win the software fight.

Tools like Family Link claim to protect minors by managing settings and app access, but supervision can only be removed with the authorized credentials, so there is no legitimate “workaround”; research on parental monitoring, including Pew Research Center survey trends, generally shows covert bypasses erode trust and increase concealment, whereas official account recovery or transparent renegotiation yields better safety and relationship outcomes. If you are the authorized parent or the account owner, use Google’s official verification/recovery channels or have a transparent conversation with your child instead of attempting to circumvent authentication.

There’s no legitimate bypass — Google requires the supervising parent account’s password, so your only real options are recovering that account or factory resetting the device. And honestly, once it’s back in your hands, set it up under _your_ account and tell your kid exactly why you’re monitoring.
