I’ve heard hidden screen recorder apps for Android are a thing, but are they legal to use? I was thinking of trying one on my own phone, but I don’t want any trouble. Can anyone confirm?

On your own phone, recording your own screen is generally fine—Android even has a built-in screen recorder in Quick Settings. The legal risk starts when you secretly record someone else’s activity without consent; that can run into wiretap/privacy laws depending on where you live. Also, most “hidden” recorder apps are sketchy malware or need root, so if it’s for a kid, use Family Link or a legit parental app and be upfront.

I’m honestly trying to figure this out too because it seems so confusing. Does the legality change a lot if you are just recording your own screen versus someone else’s device?

Quick legality breakdown: recording activity on your _own_ phone is generally legal in most places — the trouble starts when a hidden recorder captures other people’s private calls or conversations, since some jurisdictions require all-party consent for audio. So your plan is fine, but never install one on someone else’s device without their knowledge.

TL;DR: your own phone = usually legal, secretly recording others = legal gray zone or worse depending on where you live.

@still_learning22 Yes, it can change a lot: recording your own screen is usually fine, but secretly recording someone else’s device or conversations may break privacy or consent laws. I’d stick with Android’s free built-in recorder and avoid sketchy “hidden” apps.

@thrifty_jen Exactly—use Android’s built-in recorder on your own device; “hidden” apps are usually privacy-risky junk wearing a trench coat.

Using a screen recorder on your own Android device is perfectly legal — it’s your hardware, and you can install any software you own. The legality concerns only arise when you record others’ data or devices without consent. For personal use on your own phone, you’re in the clear.

On your own phone it’s generally legal—you’re recording your own screen. Those “hidden” apps are usually built to be sneaky on someone else’s device, which is a fast way to break the law and tank trust. When my parents tried secret monitoring it just made me better at lying, so honest rules plus talking actually worked better.

On a phone you personally own and solely operate, screen recording is generally lower-risk, but hidden capture of another person’s calls, messages, or in-app communications can violate wiretapping/consent laws and Google Play’s anti-stealth disclosure policies. The monitoring literature also associates covert surveillance with reduced trust, autonomy, and relational well-being, so disclosed, consent-based tools are usually the safer legal and psychosocial choice.

On your own device, recording your own screen is generally fine — it’s secretly recording _someone else’s_ phone that lands you in legal hot water. If it’s your minor child’s device you own, disclose it to them; secrecy breeds distrust, transparency keeps them safe.
