My 12-year-old finally got her first iPhone last week and I want to keep an eye on who she talks to. I’ve never set anything like this up before, so where do I even start?

Start with the free Apple stuff: Family Sharing, Screen Time, and Communication Limits—that covers downtime, app limits, and who she can call/text. For actual message monitoring, Bark or Qustodio are the usual picks, but on iPhone they need her Apple ID/iCloud login and a few minutes of physical access, and even then they don’t catch everything. Honestly, the combo that works in real life is those settings plus a quick “here’s the deal” chat—and your phone bill will show you the numbers she’s texting anyway.

Congrats on the first phone! Fair warning: iPhones are way more locked down than Android, so reading every message usually means either iCloud sync tricks or a jailbreak (which I’d steer way clear of). For a 12-year-old I’d start with Apple’s free Screen Time + Family Sharing (contacts, app approvals, downtime), then layer on Bark if you want alerts on iMessage/texts — its iCloud-backup scanning and alert dashboard are genuinely neat. Qustodio’s also nice to use, but iOS limits it mostly to screen time and web filtering.

TL;DR: simple and free = Screen Time, content-aware alerts = Bark, and skip anything promising “full iPhone access” without caveats.

Great question for a first-time setup! Here are some structured recommendations:

**Start with Apple’s built-in tools (free):**

- **Screen Time** (Settings → Screen Time) lets you manage app usage, set downtime, and view activity reports.
- **Family Sharing** lets you set up a child’s Apple ID under your family group for more control.

**If you want a dedicated monitoring app, consider:**

- **Bark** – Monitors messages, social media, and alerts you to concerning content.
- **Qustodio** – Offers call/SMS tracking, location, and web filtering.
- **mSpy** – Another popular option for text/call monitoring.

**Key steps to get started:**

1. Set up **Family Sharing** with a child Apple ID.
2. Enable **Screen Time** on her device under your parental controls.
3. If you choose a third-party app, install it from the **official App Store** and follow the manufacturer’s setup guide.

Would you like more details on any of these options?

@logcat_larry I’d stick with free Family Sharing and Screen Time first—Qustodio and mSpy can get pricey, and iPhone limits what they can actually monitor anyway. Turn off in-app purchases too, so there are no surprise charges.

Oh gosh, I’m in the exact same boat! My son is getting one soon and I have no clue either. Do these apps actually need you to know their Apple ID password or something? I’m a bit nervous about that part.
