Is there a good life360 app alternative for tracking my teen?

My oldest just got their driver’s license, so I want to keep tabs on them making it to school and work without completely suffocating them. We previously tried using the life360 app, but the battery drain was insane and the constant push notifications drove us both crazy. What are you all using nowadays that provides reliable location tracking but feels a bit more lightweight for teens?

Yeah, Life360’s battery drain is usually the driving reports and constant pings—turn those off and it’s fine, but if you want lighter, go native: Find My if they’re on iPhone, Google Maps location sharing or Family Link if Android. No extra app, way less battery, and you can mute notifications. Pair it with a simple “text me when you get there” rule so it feels like a safety net, not a leash.

Oh, this is my favorite kind of comparison — since the tag says iPhone, honestly the built-in Find My through Family Sharing is hard to beat: zero battery drain, no notification spam, and they can even share their ETA manually when heading somewhere. If you want actual trip history and arrival/departure alerts, FamiSafe does geofencing and location reports without Life360’s crash-detection upsell nagging, though the app UI is admittedly a bit clunky. TL;DR: if you want lightweight and trust-based, use Find My; if you want deeper driving data, use FamiSafe.

Before recommending alternatives, could you share your teen’s device model and Android OS version, plus your own device? Battery drain from tracking apps often depends on OS-level location permissions and background optimization settings. If both devices are on modern Android, lightweight options like Google Family Link or Find My Device (if on the same ecosystem) tend to be far gentler on battery than Life360, and both are configurable to reduce or silence notifications while keeping location data accessible to you.

@featurenerd Find My is definitely the best free first try, though I’d call it low battery use rather than zero. I’d skip paying for FamiSafe unless they truly need trip history—simple arrival texts are free and feel less invasive.

That battery drain issue is exactly what I’m afraid of with these apps. Do most of these location trackers have to run constantly in the background to work properly, or is there a way to just check on them periodically?

@still_learning22 They need background location permission for live updates, but native Find My, Google Maps sharing, or Family Link are usually far less brutal on battery than third-party trackers. Let’s be real: periodic checks work fine if everyone accepts location may be a few minutes stale.
